Does CFTRI give MSc or MTech degree
CFTRI only conducts the 2 year MSc (Food Technology) course and the degree is awarded by University of Mysore.

When was the course started?
The course was started in 1964.

What is the eligibility criteria to write the entrance exams?
Bachelor degree in Science/ Agriculture/ Horticulture/ Engineering/ Technology.

What is the minimum marks requirement?
Students who have passed in the Bachelor’s degree should have:
i) Scored 55% in optional subjects (50% for SC/ST category)
ii) Scored 50% for BSc (Hons) course (45% for SC/ST category)
iii) Min imum second class for Agriculture/ Horticulture/Engineering/ Technology

What is the reservation criteria for selection?
According to the University of Mysore rules, 50% seats are reserved for SC/ ST/ OBC and students with physical disabilities. Candidates claiming reservation under the specific category are required to provide attested documents as proof in support of their claims.

What is the number of seats
There are 30 seats available for the course.

Is it true that there is one seat for one state?
No. According to University of Mysore rules, the seat allotment is based only on merit. The top 30 students would get the seat. One seat is reserved for a personnel from the Indian Army (in service candidates). The roster (reservation scheme) of the University of Mysore is strictly followed.

So how many seats are available for general merit?
Half the number of seats are available for general merit i.e., 15. Out of these 15 seats, a seat is reserved for Indian Army candidate.

Is graduation marks also important for getting into CFTRI?
Yes, graduation marks are important for getting into CFTRI. The weightage for the entrance exam and graduation marks are 50% each.

What is the minimum marks in graduation to get into CFTRI?
The marks of the students who have appeared for the entrance exam in a given year would decide. In one batch there may be students with 70% graduation marks and in another batch students with 95% graduation marks may be appearing.

Is it true that one should have studied Maths in XII for getting into CFTRI?
The University of Mysore rules states that students who have not studied Maths in XII are eligible. But since the Food Technology course requires mathematics and statistics during the course of study, having studied Maths in XII makes it easier to understand and score in the exams.

Can I get the previous year’s entrance exam question papers?
The question papers of CFTRI entrance exam are not allowed to be taken out of the examination hall. The examination panel at CFTRI are aware of questions on social networking sites and new questions are put up taking care so that they are not repeated.

Is it compulsory to stay in the students’ hostel?
No, it is not compulsory to stay in the students’ hostel. One can make their own arrangements for stay and boarding. Having said that, it is preferred to stay in the campus itself, since campus life is something to be enjoyed and cherished. The hostel canteen is managed by the students (no profit – no loss basis) and is not expensive. It is situated in the heart of the city thus giving the choice of dining out as well.

What is the fee structure for the course?
The prescribed fee (2014-15 batch) by the University of Mysore for Karnataka students is Rs. 77,406/- and students from other states is Rs. 89,021/- to be paid at the time of admission. This is subject to revision by CFTRI and UoM.

What is the duration of exam?
The duration of exam is 2 hours for 100 marks.

Is accommodation available for students coming to write the entrance exam?
No. Mysuru being a tourist center, there are affordable and cost-accommodative hotels, dormitories etc.

What is the scope of M.Sc (FT) post completion?
1. On – campus placement
2. One can take up CSIR-NET/ DBT/ UGC/ ISMR and join elite CSIR for PhD
3. One can pursue higher studies at premier Food Research Institutes of the world

What are the facilities/ amenities for students at the campus?
There is a paid swimming pool, Gymkhana, Indoor badminton court, Basketball, Volleyball, Football and Cricket courts

What are the amenities provided in the classroom?
Classrooms are enabled with state-of-the-art Smart Boards coupled with a Workstation computer and monitored by CCTV cameras. The attendance system is online.

What are the facilities given to boarders of the hostel?
Each boarder is provided with a single room furnished with window curtains, almirah, study table and chair and seamless Wi-Fi connectivity. The mess is professionally managed by the students where delicious and hygienic food is provided at affordable rates.

Do I need to bring a laptop for the course?
Yes. From this year onwards, Engineering Graphics would be taught using AutoCAD software for which laptop is required. In addition, the laptop would be useful for browsing internet for subject related matters, preparation of dissertation and investigation reports and email connectivity.

If one plans to leave the course, is a full-fee refund possible?
No. The University of Mysore collects the fee for the full year which is non-refundable. CFTRI collects a small fee, a part of which is refunded.

Is there any age limit for taking up the entrance exam?
The extant rules of University of Mysore shall apply.

What is the syllabus to study for the Entrance Exam?
The question paper will contain short and objective questions on the following topics: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry and Nutrition, Agriculture, Dairy Technology, Horticulture, Food Technology, Home Science and Engineering. There will be balanced distribution of questions from each of the subjects listed above, so that students from various streams shall get equal opportunity to score in the test.

What documents should I bring to the entrance exam?
The admit card signed by the Principal of the college last attended.

How many seats are reserved for physically handicapped students?
One seat on ALL INDIA MERIT basis according to the University of Mysore rules.

I have written the final exam but the final semester/ year marks card is not issued yet. Can I write the exam?
If student can send the PDC from the college before the due date (30th June 2015) his/ her application will be considered for ranking, otherwise application will be rejected. Such students will have to bring the ORIGINAL marks card at the time of admission to the course (if selected).

Can I write the entrance exam in my state?
No. The ONLY exam centre is at CFTRI School, Mysuru. Candidates have to make their own arrangements for writing the entrance exam. No TA/DA would be paid to the candidates for the purpose.

How many seats are reserved for foreign students?
Extant rules of University of Mysore shall apply
