M.Sc. (CS-FOSS) Program – Computing & Internet requirements for students. :
Online learning depends critically on the availability of adequate Computing and Internet resources to the students. Candidates admitted to the Online Msc(CS-FOSS) program are required to have unlimited access to the following Desktop/Laptop and Internet facilities:
A. Hardware specifications :
1. Minimum needed :
1 GHz CPU (Pentium 4 or higher), 300GB Hard Disk, 1 GB RAM, Speakers and Mike or wired headphones( such as creative HS150), Web camera ( such as logitech C120-built-in webcam will do in case of Laptop sytems).

2. Recommended for better performance :
Intel Core i3 @ 2.10 GHz, 320GB Hard Disk, 2 GB DDR3 RAM, wired headphones( such as creative HS150), Web camera ( such as logitech C120)

B. Internet connection :
a) Wired broadband (Prefered):
1. Minimum needed :
Plan : BB Home Combo ULD 900
(4Mbps upto 8 GB, 512 Kbps beyond 8 GB)

2. Recommended for better performance :
Plan : BBG Combo ULD 1350
(4 Mbps upto 20 GB, 512 Kbps beyond 20 GB)

b) Wireless :
Any 2G or 3G datacard that give performance comparable to the wired ones mentioned in (a) above.

The Coordinating Centre would provide necessary assistance to the enrolled candidates in the downloading and installation of all the required FOSS packages on their machines.

Workload Estimates and slow-paced programs :
Every course for which a candidate has registered would require about 10-12 hours of work per week from him/her. Attempting to take up and complete all the courses prescribed for a semester in the first attempt itself so that the program can be completed within the minimum prescribed period of four semesters, would therefore need the candidate to put in about 50-60 hours of work per week — amounting to ‘full time’ commitment. Those who may not be able to commit full time for this study (such as working people) have options by which they can progress at a pace comfortable for them by taking more than four semesters to complete the program (but with in the maximum permitted time of twelve semesters). The Coordinating Centre would provide the necessary personal counseling in this regard on request.

Learning Methodologies :
The effectiveness of all distance learning programs, including the online ones, depend significantly more on the learning process rather than on the teaching process, and hence the student’s motivation and keenness is the key factor that will decide the benefits he/she is likely to derive from the Online M. Sc. (CS- FOSS) Program. Both the “Online” aspect and the “FOSS” aspect bring into play considerations, approaches and methodologies quite different from those that under lie the conventional class-room based learning
