Ph.D Entrance Examination :

** The University of Calicut offers research programmes in different subjects listed in Statutes of the University, and in inter-disciplinary areas leading to the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy.

** A candidate shall ordinarily work in a recognized place of research including the University Departments,Research Institutes and Affiliated Colleges recognized by the University.
** Applications are invited from eligible candidates for admission to the Ph.D programme under the streams (1) Full-time and (2) Part-time under the faculties of Science, Language & Literature, Humanities, Commerce & Management Studies, Education, Journalism and Fine Arts of this University.

ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION :
For admission to the Ph.D. programme in a related subject in the faculty, applicants fulfilling the following criteria shall be treated as eligible
(a) Persons who have passed Post Graduate Degree (Master Degree) Examination with at least 50% marks or equivalent Grade Point Average (GPA) of this University or an equivalent degree recognized by University of Calicut. Relaxation for minimum marks are applicable to reserved category students. OR Persons working in National Laboratories- Institutes/Universities/Government/ Private Organization nominated/sponsored by the respective employer. These persons should have a Post Graduate Degree with 50% marks, and holding a permanent position there.

(b) Above-mentioned rules will also be applicable to the foreign candidates who have obtained a Masters Degree from the statutory Indian Universities or equivalent degree from abroad.
(c) Teachers of the Colleges, aided or government, affiliated to the University, Secondary and Higher Secondary Teachers. For teachers of this University and working in Aided colleges affiliated to this University, 1.a, shall be relaxed.

(d) Application for research in inter-disciplinary areas and from applicants belonging to a faculty or subject other than the faculty or subject in which the research is proposed to be done and from the international candidates (those who have not obtained the Master’s degree from Indian Universities) shall be considered on the basis of the proven ability and aptitude of the researcher for such kind of research. Such proposal shall be examined by the Guide and the Head, place of research and place before the Research Admission Committee for recommending for admission. The admission will be confirmed after the Research Admission Committee, approves the topic.

(e) Percentage of marks for foreign candidates (those who have not obtained Master’s degree from Indian Universities) will be 50% or equivalent GPA.
(f) Candidates belonging to SC/ST category and those having 40% or more physical disability, require only a pass in the qualifying PG degree examination.

ENTRANCE TEST :
(a) Research Departments may conduct the entrance test.
(b) All the candidates getting a minimum of 50% marks in the entrance test are qualified to apply for registration to Ph.D Programme. A minimum of 35% marks in the entrance test is required in the case of SC/ST candidates to the seats reserved for them (subject to availability of seats).

Exemption from Entrance Test:
(a) Teachers of Affiliated, Aided and Govt. colleges under the University of Calicut, and teachers with FDP/QIP, etc., fellowships, and teachers of the University Departments are exempted from the entrance test.
(b) Candidates having research fellowships from Central or State funding agencies are also exempted from the entrance test. Qualified in GATE (valid score*)/GPAT (valid score*)/JRF/SRF examination of the apex bodies such as CSIR/UGC/ICAR/ICMR/DBT and DST inspire fellowship only.
* the cut off score will be decided by the concerned Department Council.
(c) M. Phil. Degree holders, i.e regular M.Phil Degree (with equivalency) with compulsory Course Work and Methodology in the relevant area of Ph.D research. The relevant area shall be ascertained by the Doctoral Committee.
(d) Foreign nationals who are otherwise eligible for admission
(e). Full-time fellows, who have been selected on the basis of a written test and interview, working in a research project under the investigation of a research guide of the University.
(f) NET qualified candidates.

ADMISSION :
(a) Students who have been shortlisted after the entrance examination, or otherwise eligible, apply to the Department/Centre/Affiliated Colleges (choose only one, based on preference given in the application), directly, in the prescribed forms along with application fee for admission.
(b) The application fee shall be remitted to the Calicut University Fund and the forms will be issued by the University.
(c) Those who are exempted from entrance test can seek admission any time in a year, in the prescribed format.
(d) However, no exemption from paying fee, except in the case of reserved categories shall be entertained.
(e) The University admits eligible candidates for Ph. D on the basis of the ranking in the Entrance Examination for pursuing research on full-time or part-time basis, under the supervision of recognized guides in designated centres.

REGISTRATION :
(a) The qualified candidate may contact the teaching/research department/centre/ recognized institutes/ affiliated college, where he/she prefers to pursue the PhD course, and seek the availability and willingness of the research guide who is competent in the area in which he/she is willing to do research and work with him/her to develop a research proposal

(b) Every person, if he/she is otherwise eligible and qualifies as per above conditions and desirous of doing research work for the Ph. D degree should face the interview before a committee.
(c) On the basis of the interview, the allocation of the Research Guide for a selected candidate shall be decided by the Department/Centre/ Institution/ Affiliated College, in a formal manner depending on the number of candidates per faculty member, the available specialization among the Research Guides and the research interest of the candidates as indicated by the candidates during interview .

RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP :
The University fellowships shall be awarded on the basis of merit and keeping the norms of reservation. A valid registration for PhD course in the University does not warrant that the candidate is eligible for University Fellowship for research studies.

COURSE WORK :
A Ph.D research scholar shall undergo a course work of one-semester duration, which includes compulsory class room study, seminar and assignment.

Procedure of application :

** Applications can be submitted on line from 28.11.2015 to 11.12.2015 midnight.
** Please see the link ‘fee remittance’ in the Admission Website (cuonline.ac.in) or the link ‘instant web payment system’ in the Official Website of the University (universityofcalicut.info) for remitting fee and submitting online application.
** The application and entrance examination fee of Rs.550/- (SC/ST Rs.220/) shall be remitted to Calicut University Fund (Select the purpose ‘ Application and entrance examination fee for Ph.D admission 2016’) by e-payment (SBT online/SBT e-chalan/Friends/Akshaya e-chalan).

** The print out of the application duly attested by a gazetted officer along with e-challan receipt of Rs.550/- (Rs.220/-for SC/ST candidates) towards application and Entrance Examination fee (SC/ST candidates shall also attach a copy of the community certificate along with application) should reach the Head of the University Teaching Departments concerned on or before Dec 15, 5.00 PM.

** However, in the case of those subjects, which have not been offered in the Teaching Departments of this University, such applications should be submitted to the Director, Directorate of Admission, Tagore Nikethan, University of Calicut on or before Dec 15, 5.00 PM.

HALL TICKETS FOR ENTRANCE EXAMINATION :
** The online Registration I.D.No. is mandatory for downloading hall tickets for the entrance examinations.
** This I.D.No should also be kept and mentioned by the candidate in all future communications.
** The candidates can download hall tickets for the entrance examination from cuonline.ac.in (Please see the link “Ph.D”) 3 days before the date of entrance examination.
** No individual communication regarding entrance exam will be sent to the candidates and the candidates shall go through the University Websites and the University Press release for the latest informaton.

OTHER CONDITIONS :
(a) A candidate can choose up to THREE Research Centres in order of preference and the rank list would be prepared accordingly.
(b) A Research Guide may not take more than 2 scholars from the Entrance List of qualified candidates
(c) As stipulated in the regulation, University fellowship is not guaranteed to the scholars admitted in the University Departments
(d) A scholar may be admitted under a Guide, if she/he submits an undertaking that University Fellowship is not required.
(e) Other approved Research Centres of the University shall arrange their own funds to meet the fellowship/research expenses of the scholars
(f) Admission is possible only against the notified vacancy.
(g)Those who want to appear for Entrance Exam in 2 different disciplines should contact the Departments concerned. In such cases the Departments concerned will conduct entrance examinations in two different sessions on the same day fixed for the entrance examination. (ie one exam in the forenoon and the other in the afternoon).
(h) Candidates who wish to apply for two different disciplines, which require seperate entrance examination has to apply and pay the fees seperately.

Schedule For Online registration, Entrance examination, Publication of result etc :
Commencement of online registration : 28.11.2015
Last date of online registration : 11.12.2015.
Last date for receipt of print out of applications : 15.12.2015.
Date of Entrance Examination : 17.12.2015
Publication of result : 30.12.2015.
Defective applications and applications received after the prescribed date will summarily be rejected and fee once paid will not be refunded or adjusted for any other purpose.
Eligible candidates after the entrance examination should apply for admission in the prescribed format along with a chalan of Rs.50/-.
